Today we’re going to take a look at mineral extraction — or the removal of rocks and minerals from the Earths’ crust — and examine how this human activity impacts all aspects of Geography. We’ll focus on the Democratic Republic of the Congo and take a look at how the mining of minerals such as cobalt, has significantly impacted life in this region.

The DRC has been in conflict since its independence.
Specifically because it’s full of such strategically important resources. Western nations intentionally murder DRC leaders that threaten the status quo.
The DRC could be the richest most powerful nation in Africa. It’ll never be allowed to as long as that wealth and power cause even slightly less money to go to already wealthy western corporate conglomerates.
Where I live there is a dump and they burn the waste and turn it into electricity

I thought that rare-earth metals are not rare just "rare" in the sense that it is rare for the people of the country to tolerate rare-earth mining. They can get away with it in countries where the central government has greater control of the people in the area or where there is little control at all by anyone. The USA has "rare-earths" just that people don’t want mines in their area or in areas where the results would affect the people that have a say in how the area is used.
