Let’s talk about biotin for hair and skin. You may have even noticed biotin shampoo for hair loss—does it really work?

Biotin is vitamin B7. Biotin is especially important for pregnant women and children. A deficiency of biotin in a pregnant mother could lead to malformations in the growth and development of the child.

Biotin acts as a coenzyme in the formation of proteins. There are a lot of different fats and proteins that make up body tissue. It’s a helper enzyme in the formation of myelin, hair, and skin.

The microbes in the large intestine make just as much biotin as you get from your diet. But, the majority of biotin you get from your diet is not in a free form—the biotin made by your microbes is. Anything that destroys your microbes, especially antibiotics, can have a negative effect on biotin.

The RDA for biotin is not fully agreed upon, and it’s difficult to get biotin from your diet. However, a few foods rich in biotin are egg yolks, liver, kidneys, and certain cheeses.

The top causes of biotin deficiency are:
• Raw egg whites
• The keto diet (causes the demand for biotin to increase)
• Anti-seizure medication
• Smoking
• Alcohol
• Lowered stomach acid
• Pregnancy or breastfeeding
• High amounts of exercise
• Age
• Genetic issues

If you’re experiencing symptoms like keto rash, hair thinning, or hair loss on keto, it could be because of a lack of biotin in the diet.

A subclinical deficiency in biotin could lead to thinning hair, hair loss, or skin rashes. However, symptoms of a major biotin deficiency can be more severe.

Symptoms of a biotin deficiency:
• Alopecia
• Eczema
• Seizures
• Candida
• Depression

Biotin cream or shampoo can be absorbed through the skin and may be beneficial for a subclinical biotin deficiency. You may also want to include biotin in your diet and even take a supplement form.

  1. I am 26 now and have been taking biotin supplements for a year now 5mg a day… at first i noticed some hair loss weirdoy but after that. My hair start to get thicker , waved and shiny.. as well as my hair loss was cery little

  5. Be very careful with taking Biotin if you have candida. It is a big growth factor for it.

    Another potential issue is if you have Acne and skin problems, and are potentially B5 deficient. Biotin reduces B5 absorption, and B5 is necessary for fat metabolism.

    So if you don’t have candida problems, taking larger doses of B5 and some B7 could be a great solution for skin and hair

  6. Biotin does not help with hair growth – it’s a myth. If you’re deficient in a vitamin B or many other supplements then yes, you need to find out and help.

  8. Hi dr Eric berg, first of all I watch every videos of yours from the past 3 months and I find them pretty useful god bless you for good informations you give us.

    I have few question about biotin, whenever I take biotin my hairs only falls about 10 or maybe 20 a day and when I don’t take it it can lead to 50 or even 100 , does it mean I am dependent upon biotin for the rest of my life.

    2nd question will it regrow lost hairs since it halts my hairs to fall out,

    And I always did shed pretty much hairs for years since 15 but I’m about 21 and I am recently started taking care of my hairs, about a few months prior I lost 25kg in 2 month I trained very hard and families tell me my hair were good before the weight loss now I say if it’s a shock it will grow back but my worry is dht, can dht hair loss be reversed if it’s not any kind alopecia, I heard that chronic telegenic effluvium can also happen to mens because I also had stress but managed it now,

    By the way after puberty my hairs got thin from that time before that it were thick will biotin make it thicker and reverse hair loss? Also how much ug per day, thanks.

  9. Why not add dosage and type of Biotin that would benefit? There are too many dosages and brands out there today that make things confusing.

  17. What about chlorella? The one I use says "13mcg" (43% of the recommended daily dose). Do you think that is effective?

  18. Finally somebody who didnt just say only 2% are deficient lol and it has bad side effects. I know at least 15 people irl who swore by biotin for hair and nail growth, and trust me, the results spoke for themselves. In 24 hours of starting its done more for my skin elasticity than 2 weeks of collagen supplements. And the biotin hair cream already making it thicker in 24 hours.

  19. I had nice straight hair till age of 40 years but they were thin. Then I started having severe hair fall. The dermatologist advised Biotin 1000 mcg per day for few months. I took it for few months and my hairfall stopped and my hair became thick but they became curly.

    Now it’s difficult to make them straight even after 3 years. I don’t like curly hair. So this is the major side effect that I experienced unfortunately😞

  20. I have a question to you people. I am 35 years old female. One of doctors said I have a man type hair loss, which covers the top of my head, but also thats not true because I have a hair loss from everywhere and top of my head is the better section actually. They did 16 different tests, they said I have a slightly higher testosterone which is not that high. I have been very stressed in less 6 years. I need help. I nevet tried biotin. What I should order it? What should I pay attention on when I order it? Can someone help please 🙏

  21. The high school hack was always take prenatal vitamins (30-500mcg of biotin) and dollar tree biotin supplements (800 mcg biotin) when growing out your hair. The amount of biotin seemed to be enough for anybody off one of each a day, and you got other health benefits from the prenatal vitamins, and the results were always insane. This stuff is like borderline minoxidil effective for most people. Sometimes it’s all that’s needed until 45-50 years old.

    Thanks for actual real info, and not just copy and paste and parrot off the same disappointing information!!

  22. I tried Dr. Berg’s biotin shampoo & conditioner, and it left my hair so gooey. I liked his old shampoo better. I also take biotin capsules, for months now, but it doesn’t seem to help. I’ve also been taking Dr Burke’s hair formula for a couple of years, as well as his Trace minerals, which are very expensive! I’m trying several things, for the past couple of years, but nothing seems to help. Our water is very full of chemical sludge and bleach, though. I may try the filtered shower heads that Dr Berg recommends, I just need to find those videos again.

I have experiencing hair shedding and thinning and some of hair have white stuff at the end which I don’t know and this condition started since I came in gulf to work which we normally don’t get sun due to job conditions also the sun is so hot here I have no family history of hair loss am worried what’s going on in ma body.
